Recycling

Chatting with Chris M (and dude, you are a Carbon Copy of my geek-side, right down to the retro IT love and obsessive eco-habits ) about our habits when it comes to energy efficiency and recycling. We both recycle glass, paper, aluminium cans
– both pick litter up and both go around switching off not-in-use
Monitors and PC’s at client sites. Barmy? Probably. But if you read PC
Pro’s
"Electric Shock!"
article you’ll soon realise that companies trying to save money could
do no worse than check out how to be energy efficient – and they have
the added bonus of helping save the planet!

I mentioned the amount of IT Kit I’ve seen clients ready to skip, but I’ve instead diverted to an organisation called ENTE Training based in Aston, Birmingham who refurbish or recycle any IT items.
So instead of being land-filled, those PC’s and Printers get stripped
off their precious metals, components, etc. which are then re-used. A
number of large organisations already use them, and once I’ve let any
of my clients know about them they’ve been really happy to send dead IT
kit to ENTE instead of to the landfill. Everybody wins.

Chris also mentioned Good Energy, a Green Energy provider. I’ll probably be changing my supplier across later today.

Three other sites worth mentioning – Community Repaint, a network of organisations who use up your old paint (don’t go throwing it away) for local projects, and FreeCycle
– which is becoming really REALLY popular! You basically offer stuff
that you no longer want, and people come and collect it. Why skip stuff
when other people can make use of it? There’s a really good community
spirit on the site – check it out.

And finally, if you don’t Recycle… why not? Check out Recycle NOW! for more information on how to get started.
